Johannesburg is a wonderfully culturally diverse city. A married couple, who are close friends of mine, come from different cultures and we were laughing at a situation that occurred when they first started dating. The then-boyfriend, while visiting the then-girlfriend’s family used a word that English speakers often use to describe an unpleasant person. It’s a word that is not very offensive to English speakers, but as my friend found out, very distasteful in the Afrikaans community (generally speaking). However, with time and understanding, husband and wife have gotten over the cultural speedbumps and are living in marital bliss.
I have often stated that if someone says “I know everything there is to know about our ERP system” they’re lying. ERP systems are so feature and function rich, it would take one to focus solely on getting educated in order to know it all.
You know how sometimes you’re driving along a stretch of a familiar road as a passenger and you notice things, beautiful things, which you did not see while driving?
A few years ago, if one said the word “drone” most of us would picture a male bee buzzing about, ordering the worker bees around. Nowadays, the word conjures images of flying robots buzzing about spying on people.
Last week a colleague came to my desk for assistance with a video editing tool. While showing him how to produce a video, I commented on his busy Desktop and that he should tidy it up for demonstrations. “Oh that’s easy,” he said, “Check this out” and took control of the mouse right-clicked on the Desktop and disabled the Show Desktop Icons option. Boom. It was like shoving all your toys under the bed when your mom told you to clean your room.
TOMS is a company that sells apparel. What they do differently, however, is based on your purchase they give either the same product you purchased or another product to assist those in need. For example, when you buy a pair of shoes they provide a pair of shoes to someone who does not own shoes. This company is not thinking let’s brand the planet with our shoes, but rather let’s enable people to do more by putting shoes on their feet. With a comfortable pair of shoes, people can walk further, perhaps to school or to the hospital or to a job interview.
You know how you have lived all your life never having heard a word or phrase and then one day it pops up, and then it’s everywhere you look? I am never sure if it’s down to not noticing because you’re not aware of its existence or if it just becomes a more popular term.
