Measuring the ROI of your ERP

ERP ROI measurementWe are regularly asked to provide a tool to demonstrate ROI (Return on Investment) on the purchase and implementation of an ERP system. Personally I don’t believe in today’s uncertain, unpredictable, fast moving world there is value in such a tool.

Remember a number of years back when you were sold insurance and investment policies – the salesperson would reveal graphs on the 5, 10, 15, 20 year predictions of how your investment would perform. You also had the choice of high, medium and low risk and each of these had different graph predictions. All of which was both mind-boggling and very convincing. I have to ask you – how have those investments actually performed against the Sales graphs? None of them factored in Enron and the economic crash we are recovering from, not to mention over $100 per barrel oil price and other hits that the economy has had to bear.

go-liveFinally my project has ended! After 12 months of running, cross training and stretching in preparation for the weekend finally arrived. The Friday before the event was spent reviewing lists, checking equipment, packing bags, repacking bags, rechecking lists, and before I knew it, it was Saturday morning and the event was upon me.

In the 15 hours, 9 minutes it took me to traverse across Northern England, I had plenty of time to think about how this project has been so very similar to an ERP project and how the actual event was so very similar to a go live.

ERP Ready?

Ensuring ERP readinessIt’s May already and I am just 6 weeks away from my epic run across England, the Wall Run. 69 miles, loosely following the route of Hadrian’s Wall. Preparation for this ultra-marathon has been all consuming; 5am runs before work, full weekends spent running 20 plus miles and cross training. Tempo runs, intervals and fartlek’s have become part of my everyday vocabulary, not to mention testing the kit and worrying about race day nutrition and hydration.

In search of the perfect (ERP) fit

perfect ERP fitRecently I have been exposed to a big debate on an ERP LinkedIn forum around the use of descriptions in the industry such as customizing, personalizing, tailoring, and configuring. Is this just marketing semantics, or are there very real differences in the meaning of these phrases and the implications of using these phrases when describing, or more to the point, promoting an ERP system?

Working in SYSPRO, I know we pride ourselves on the fact that our ERP system is, and I quote: “highly flexible and customizable”, that we are known as the "go-to" solution because of this, but I think it is important to unpack what we mean by these phrases and what the consumer understands by these phrases. If we are to be responsible in ensuring that what our customers see and understand they are getting, is in actual fact exactly what they are getting, then I don’t think we can use the excuse “I can only be responsible for what I say. I cannot be responsible for what you understand”.

Defining and Managing Project Scope

When people talk about the three critical factors of projects, they refer to scope, time and cost. It is well documented that you can’t change one without impacting the other two, yet it still seems to come as a surprise when a change in scope delays a project or increases the cost.

One of my early mentors in project management used to drum into me the importance of scope management. “Where’s the scope documented?” would be the first response whenever you went to her for advice.

Delivering Value

When I read a recent SYSPRO blog The Grace of Change, about a Seeker of Value, one customer immediately sprang to mind: Westlands Horticulture. A fast growing business, both organically and through acquisition, they always seem to be involved in one project or another with K3 SYSPRO. Finbarr McNamee, in his role as Group IT Manager is certainly the Seeker of Value within Westlands Horticulture. He engages with the business and gets to grip with the real business need, helping others find new, smarter and more effective ways of doing things. Finbarr drives the change through the organization in several ways.
